Almost everything written about starting a security company in Alabama gets the first question wrong. Alabama does license you, and it has since Act 2009-640 built the Alabama Security Regulatory Board.
What makes the state unusual is not that a licence exists but how many do. The ASRB sells four credentials, and a staffed company holds all four: the company licence itself, a qualifying agent licence, a licence for every officer who stands a post, and a certified trainer licence for whoever delivers their training. Miss one and the other three do not save you.
The second thing to understand is the calendar. Alabama does not run your licence year from the day you were approved. It runs from 30 September, and it does not care when you arrived.

The whole path, in order
Two steps carry everything else. Neither is the company application, which is the part most people start with.
Identify who your qualifying agent will be

Alabama also insists this person is your employee, which rules out the freelance arrangement operators use in other states.
Form the entity with the Alabama Secretary of State

Bind cover and get the certificate filed

File the contract security company application
3–6 weeksThe $250 packet carries the corporate documents, the insurance certificates and the qualifying agent's details. Payment must come by cashier's cheque, money order or a cheque drawn on a licensed security company, so a personal card will not clear it.
Train and license every officer
1–2 weeks per intakeEight hours of initial training from a board-licensed certified trainer, then $112 per person for a licence that runs two years from issue. Unarmed officers must be 18; armed officers must be 21 and add four hours of armed training.
Sort the sheriff's pistol permit for armed posts
1–3 weeksSection 34-27C-11 requires an armed security officer to hold a pistol permit issued by the sheriff of the county where he or she lives. This survived Alabama dropping the permit requirement for ordinary carry, and it is the step armed operators most often skip.
Go live, then diarise 30 September
OngoingMarketing, first contracts, and one date in the calendar. Renewal must reach the board before 1 October, and Alabama will not accept it at all after 31 October, at which point you are applying from scratch.
Step 1: Line Up Your Qualifying Agent
Alabama will not issue a company licence to a business that has no qualifying agent attached, so this decision sets your whole timeline.
What counts as qualifying experience
Two routes, three years each. Either you have managed, supervised or administered at a contract security company, or you have supervised at a law enforcement agency — federal, military, state, county or municipal count equally. The board takes this on a Certification of Experience and Training form rather than a CV, so vague employment history is a returned application.
The condition that catches partnerships
The qualifying agent has to be an employee of the licensed company. That differs from the arrangement operators borrow from Georgia or Florida, where a qualifier can sit across several businesses. Here, one agent across two companies needs the board's prior written approval, and without it your second company has no agent at all.
Step 2: Form Your Legal Business Entity
Alabama has made this the simplest part. A certificate of formation costs a flat $200 for every entity type, so choosing between an LLC and a corporation is a liability and tax question rather than a price one.
What to decide before filing
The entity name you file is the name that appears on the ASRB licence, the insurance certificate and every patch. Reserve it for $25 rather than discovering a conflict after the company application is in. Coming in from a neighbouring state, register as a foreign entity — $150, and the board checks it.
Step 3: Insurance the Board Holds on File
Most states tell you to carry cover. Alabama tells you to prove it to the regulator and keep proving it.
Section 34-27C-6 sets $2,000,000 for bodily or personal injury and $200,000 for property damage — an unusual split, because the property damage figure is low enough that clients routinely ask for more. The policy must carry endorsements for general liability, personal injury and workers' compensation, and the insurer cannot modify or cancel it without giving the board thirty days' notice. Your carrier is therefore in a direct relationship with your regulator, and a lapse is not a private problem.
There is no surety bond anywhere in Chapter 27C. The certificate is the security. Workers' compensation itself becomes mandatory at five regular employees under Ala. Code § 25-5-50, but the endorsement is required from the first day either way.
Step 4: Apply for Your Contract Security Company Licence
The packet is thicker than the fee suggests: certificates of good standing or authority, the insurance certificates, and the qualifying agent's own licence application running alongside it with photographs, fingerprint cards and the ALEA release.
Key Tips for Your Application
- Pay by cashier's cheque, money order or a cheque drawn on a licensed security company. Nothing else is accepted.
- Check your qualifying agent against the board's disqualifying convictions list first. A felony bars permanently absent a full pardon, a misdemeanour of moral turpitude for five years, a violent misdemeanour for ten.
- Search existing licensees before settling on a trading name — the board runs separate lookups for companies and for guards and trainers.

Step 5: Arm Your Posts Properly
Alabama runs armed security through two doors at once, and they are not in the same building.
The ASRB issues the armed security officer licence: 21 or over, four hours of initial armed training on top of the eight unarmed hours, two hours of refresher a year. Separately, § 34-27C-11 requires that officer to hold a pistol permit issued by the sheriff of the county where he or she lives. Since Alabama no longer demands a permit for ordinary concealed carry, an officer may reasonably believe they need none — and carrying on a post without one violates the chapter.
Step 6: Go Live Across Alabama's Metros
Four markets, and they do not want the same product.
- Huntsville, at about 234,000 people, is now the state's largest city — Redstone Arsenal, aerospace and defence suppliers, and clients who audit credentials.
- Birmingham carries the most local overlay. City Code § 12-10-46 makes entertainment venues prove their contracted officers are ASRB-licensed or exempt, and subjects those officers to city business licensing on top.
- Montgomery is government and institutional work, and the ASRB's own office sits there.
- Mobile is port, petrochemical and shipbuilding, where prime contractors set limits well above the state minimum.
Step 7: Build Smart, Not Fast
The four-licence structure punishes drift more than inexperience. Every officer expires two years from their own start date, the qualifying agent has another date, the trainer a third, and the company renews on a fixed date shared by every licensee in the state.

Alabama is cheaper to enter than almost any of its neighbours. Six hundred dollars puts a licensed company, a qualifying agent and one officer on the road, with no exam anywhere in the way.
That cheapness is what makes the discipline file read the way it does.
