How To Start A Security Company in Michigan (2026 Guide)

Michigan licenses guard companies through LARA as a Security Guard Agency — $300 for two years, a $25,000 bond, five references and two county officials who must sign off.

View This Topic

Michigan is an unusual place to license a security company, and not because the paperwork is heavy. The fees are modest, there is no exam, and the state does not tell you how to train your guards.

What it does instead is put your application in front of two county officials and five people who have known you for five years. The Private Security Business and Security Alarm Act — PA 330 of 1968, at MCL 338.1051 onward — vets the person, not the curriculum.

That changes how you sequence a launch here. Below is the path in the order it actually happens.

The whole path, in order

Three steps are marked blocking, and two depend on other people's calendars. That is why they belong at the front of yours.

  1. Confirm your Qualifying Officer clears MCL 338.1056(1)(g)

    Immediate, or years
Blocks everything downstream — start it early

Either you already satisfy one of the five experience routes or you do not, and there is no course that fixes it. The commonest misread is the four-year clause: it wants supervisory rank above patrolman under a certificate-of-authority holder, not four years on a post.

  2. Register the entity and secure a Michigan address

    1–2 weeks

File with the LARA Corporations Division and lock down a real physical location in the state — MCL 338.1058(1) requires one, and a registered-agent mailbox will not pass. Pick the trade name carefully; LARA has to approve it separately.

  3. Collect five reference statements

    2–4 weeks

Five reputable citizens who have known you at least five years, on LARA's Reference Statement Form, none connected to you by blood or marriage. Start asking early — chasing the fifth signature is a classic two-week delay.

  4. Get the county prosecutor and sheriff to sign

    2–8 weeks
Blocks everything downstream — start it early

Michigan routes your company licence through local law enforcement. The prosecuting attorney and the county sheriff — or the chief of police if your office sits in a city, township or village — both sign LARA's approval form, and until they do the application is legally incomplete.

  5. Post the $25,000 bond or file the policy in lieu

    1–2 weeks

Sureties price this on the owner's personal credit, so a thin file means a higher rate rather than a refusal. If you file the 25/100/200 liability policy instead, remember it is a licensing document, not a commercial one.

  6. File the application with LARA and the $300 fee

    Up to 180 days
Blocks everything downstream — start it early

Two passport photos of the Qualifying Officer, the Entity Members Form, bond or certificate of insurance, the local approvals and the references. The statutory clock only starts once every one of those is in.

  7. Get uniforms, patches, badges and ID cards approved

    2–6 weeks

LARA approves the uniform, the shoulder patch — minimum three by five inches, carrying your agency name — any badge or shield, and the format of the ID cards you issue. Approve first, then order, or you will pay for the run twice.

  8. Hire, fingerprint, and start filing rosters

    Ongoing

You submit prints to the Michigan State Police before a guard starts, with 90 days of provisional employment allowed while clearance runs. Employee rosters go to LARA every quarter on 15 April, 15 July, 15 October and 15 January.

Step 1: Clear the Qualifying Officer test

The licence hangs on one named individual, the Qualifying Officer: 21 or older, high school education or equivalent, no felony conviction, no disqualifying misdemeanour in the last five years, no insanity adjudication, no outstanding warrant.

The five routes in

You also need one of these: three years running a guard business on your own account in another state; four years under a certificate-of-authority holder with supervisory rank above patrolman; four years as a full-time certified police officer; two years full-time in the business plus a baccalaureate in police administration or industrial security; or two years as a military police officer with honourable service.

The degree route is the one people overlook. A criminal justice graduate with two years in a corporate security department qualifies where a ten-year post officer does not.

No exam, and that surprises people

There is no company exam and no Qualifying Officer exam here. The written test in this act belongs to security alarm system contractors under MCL 338.1056(1)(h)(ii). If you have priced a licence in Ohio or Indiana, that absence is worth registering: Michigan spends its scrutiny on references and local sign-off instead.

The Security Guard Agency licence is the entity licence, so the entity comes first. LLC Articles of Organization run $50 with the LARA Corporations Division; a profit corporation is $60 at the minimum share tier.

LLC or corporation, and the address that matters more

Either works. Guard work is liability-dense and wage claims are the usual source, so keep your personal name off the operating entity and use a commercial registered agent.

What Michigan will not flex on is location. MCL 338.1058(1) requires a physical location in this state; a virtual office or an out-of-state headquarters with a Michigan mail drop is a rejection. Choose the county deliberately too, because that county's prosecutor and sheriff will be signing your form.

One upside: once LARA issues, MCL 338.1055 bars any municipality from requiring a further security licence. A Detroit contract does not mean a Detroit licence — Detroit's own private patrol ordinance, Chapter 43 Article V, asks only for the state licence and charges no city fee.

Step 3: Get Bonded and Insured

MCL 338.1059(4) will not let LARA issue without a $25,000 surety bond. In lieu of it you may file a liability policy written at $25,000 property damage, $100,000 for injury to or death of one person, and $200,000 for more than one. Those are the only insurance figures in the act — Michigan sets no general liability minimum for guard companies at all.

Step 4: Apply for Your Security Guard Agency Licence

The fee is $300 for an entity, $200 for a sole proprietorship and $50 per branch, covering the full two-year term. There is no separate issue fee.

Five references, and who cannot write them

MCL 338.1057 wants statements from five reputable citizens who have known you at least five years and are not related or connected to you by blood or marriage. Relatives and business partners are out; former supervisors and long-standing professional contacts are the reliable pool.

The prosecutor and the sheriff

This is the step that makes Michigan Michigan. Your application is incomplete until the county prosecuting attorney and the county sheriff, or the chief of police where the business sits in a city, township or village, have each signed LARA's approval form. Neither works to a deadline, so deliver the forms in person and follow up.

Key Tips for Your Application

  • Never had a licence denied, suspended or revoked? Ask about the nonrenewable temporary licence under MCL 338.1057, worth up to 120 days of operating while the investigation runs.
  • Get the trade name cleared. MCL 338.1073 bars any name LARA has not approved and any name implying a government connection.
  • Calendar the renewal the day you are licensed. Miss it by more than 30 days and you reapply from scratch under section 7.

What it actually costs

Michigan is cheap to enter, and the table shows why. What it cannot show is the bond premium: the surety prices that off your personal credit, not a schedule.

Michigan's published state filing costs. The surety bond premium is deliberately absent — it is credit-priced per applicant, not scheduled.

Required line items only in the total; anything tagged optional is excluded. Figures are current published amounts and move — treat them as a planning range, not a quote. Statutory fees checked August 2026. Confirm against LARA's private security guard licensing pages before you write any cheques.

Step 5: Uniforms, Badges and Armed Officers

LARA approves the uniform and insignia before anyone wears them. The shoulder patch is mandatory on jackets, coats and shirts, must measure at least three by five inches, and must carry your agency's name. Badges and shields need separate approval and cannot resemble law enforcement insignia. Employee ID cards need LARA's sign-off on form and content, and cannot bear the state seal.

Armed work is where Michigan diverges hardest. There is no armed security endorsement: MCL 338.1069(4) says only that a licensee may not carry a deadly weapon unless licensed under state law. That sends your officers to the ordinary Concealed Pistol Licence at the county clerk, $100 plus fingerprinting, on an eight-hour course of five hours classroom and three on the range firing thirty rounds. That licence runs to each officer's own birthday, four to five years out under MCL 28.425l, so armed-post renewals never fall on a common date. Operators who also work in Wisconsin find that jarring. No security-specific firearms curriculum exists here, which makes your own armed standards a competitive document rather than a compliance one.

Step 6: Go Live — and Start Building Your Reputation

Michigan's guard market concentrates around metro Detroit, roughly 4.3 million people across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb, with Grand Rapids anchoring a west Michigan metro of about 1.1 million.

  • Build separate service pages for Detroit, Warren and Sterling Heights, Grand Rapids, and the Ann Arbor–Lansing university and state-government corridor. One statewide page ranks for nothing.
  • Collect Google reviews from your first three clients while the work is fresh.
  • Answer the phone. In manufacturing and property management, the vendor who picks up within a ring or two wins work that price never would.

Step 7: Build Smart, Not Fast

Because Michigan mandates no guard training hours, the standard you set is yours to defend. Write your own post orders, set your own minimum onboarding, and document it — when an incident reaches litigation, the absence of a state curriculum means your program is the only benchmark anyone will measure you against.

Keep the compliance rhythm visible: quarterly rosters, fingerprints before the start date, the biennial renewal, the February annual statement. For the wage-and-hour side, our labor law and onboarding guide for security companies covers the mechanics behind most guard-company lawsuits.

Bonus: Use Technology to Stay Compliant and Professional

In a state that sets no training curriculum and takes rosters four times a year, the operators who win multi-site contracts are the ones whose records beat the incumbent's: GPS-verified patrols, checkpoint scans, same-night incident reports, and an employee roster you export rather than rebuild every quarter. That is the job Safetrac does; see how on our product page.

Final Thoughts

Michigan asks a different question than most states. Not "can you pass a test" or "can you fund a company," but "will five people who have known you five years, a county prosecutor and a sheriff vouch for you." Answer that and the rest is a $300 fee and a two-year term.

So your launch schedule is set by other people's inboxes. Start the reference and county-approval work in week one, before the entity is even registered, and the 180-day statutory window becomes a ceiling you never approach.

Then remember what Michigan did not give you: a training standard, a firearms curriculum, a capital test. Those become your differentiators. The companies that grow here set higher internal standards than the state asked for, then show clients the paperwork proving it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get a Security Guard Agency licence in Michigan?

Budget three to five months. LARA is bound by statute to issue or deny within 180 days of a completed application, but "completed" means the county prosecuting attorney and the sheriff or police chief have already signed your approval form. Those signatures have no deadline attached, and they are what usually sets the pace.

Do I need a Qualifying Officer to start a security company in Michigan?

Yes. Every Security Guard Agency licence hangs on one named Qualifying Officer who is 21 or older, holds a high school education or equivalent, has no felony record, and meets one of five experience routes in MCL 338.1056(1)(g). Ordinary line-guard years do not count toward the four-year route.

How much does it cost to start a security company in Michigan?

The state filings come to roughly $375 — a $300 Security Guard Agency licence covering two years, $50 for LLC Articles of Organization and $25 for the annual statement. The real money is the surety bond premium, commercial general liability and the payroll you float before your first client pays.

What bond or insurance does Michigan require for a security guard agency?

A $25,000 surety bond. MCL 338.1059(4) lets you file a liability policy instead, written at $25,000 property damage, $100,000 for injury or death of one person and $200,000 for more than one. That policy satisfies LARA but not commercial clients, who typically want $1M per occurrence.

Does Michigan require security guard training hours?

No. Michigan sets no pre-assignment hours and no continuing education for agency guards — the training clause in MCL 338.1081 reaches private security police, not your officers. Guards must be 18, hold a high school diploma or GED, and clear a fingerprint check you submit as the employer.
